Wood-turning all types of timbers into something useful

Saturday Sessions with Colin

Saturday Sessions with Colin

Saturday Morning Direction

At the last general meeting it was suggested during the discussion that the session could be a forum for providing members with an introduction to new ideas, techniques or even machinery / jig usage.

Colin Dobson, the Saturday session leader, will be on holiday until early July; however, on return he will organise a program which will be promoted in the newsletter & on the web site. Some ideas in no specific order are:

  • Using the scroll saw for intarsia or making toy furniture.
  • Understanding what jigs are available in the workshop.
  • Plans for a toolbox will be available for new members to become familiar with the club’s machinery.
  • Demonstration of how to turn an emerging bowl.
  • Finger joints and / or biscuits for laminating timber.

Members can put forward what they would like to learn and if necessary, the session leader will find someone to meet the request.

Interactive Remote Demonstrations

Like most workshops in Melbourne, WoSP has been closed since the COVID lockdown started. So the only thing you can do if you do not have a workshop at home is browse through YouTube reviewing numerous videos.

Our club has been informed about Theo’s ‘Interactive Remote Demonstrations’ (IRD’s).

His sessions are a Live event using ZOOM, available each Saturday at 10.30am.

This week Theo demonstrates how to master spindle gouge control, to create the delicate coves and beads on the handle of an elegant letter opener. He will show how to form the flat surfaces, and keen edges evenly on both sides of the blade using the lathe!

Theo will cover:

  • Wood selection and grain orientation
  • Fine spindle gouge control
  • Setting up and using a disc sander on your lathe
  • Hand sanding techniques
  • Finishes

You can reserve your place at this live event by emailing miked@recordpower.co.uk with a Subject line of “RSVP” requesting to attend the 10.30am session & stating where you are from. You will then be sent your ZOOM meeting login details.

Free Woodturning Demonstration ~ Chris Pouncy

Well known wChris-Pouncyood turner Chris Pouncy, as UK and Southern Hemisphere Sales Manager for Robert Sorby Tools, travels the world demonstrating the best techniques and tools to use on the lathe.

Rather than focusing on set items, Chris tends to show people how to select the right tools for the job and how to get them to work the way they’re supposed to.

The latter applies in particular to special purpose tools, for example, spiralling and texturing tools. Lacing his presentation with humour Chris shows how to hold the tools, how to present them to the lathe, how fast or slow to run the lathe, and covers important safety aspects as well.

Based on his experience, we asked Chris to sum up the most common mistakes woodturners make. He rattled off the following:

When asked the most common mistakes woodturners make Chris rattled off the following:

  1. Running the lathe too slow
  2. Sanding the wood too fast
  3. Sanding the wood without doing checks to effectively move through the grits
  4. Not using sharp tools — the sharper they are, the safer they are
  5. Having toolrests at the right height for best tool presentation
  6. Using the right tool for the job
  7. Choosing the right wood for your project

He can be seen at Woodworkers of the Southern Peninsula, 109 Boneo Road, Rosebud South on 15th July at 12 noon.
