PILOT HOLES - Courtesy of Tommy Byers

One of the most frustrating things about drilling a pilot hole for a screw is to match up the size of the drill bit with the size of the screw.

First, yes, you should be drilling pilot holes for your screws in your woodworking projects…that’s a bonus tip.

Second, the pilot hole can’t be bigger than the screw and it can’t be too small.

To quickly find the right sizes drill bit, hold the shank of the bit up in front of the screw. You should see only the threads of the screw showing around the drill bit.

If you don’t see threads, the drill bit is too big

If you see threads AND the shank of the screw, the drill bit is too small.

Although, it will likely still work, especially in softer woods.

I wanted to share something with you that I was reminded of this week. It’s a simple, but really helpful trick. It’s mostly helpful for U.S. woodworkers using imperial units, but it can also be helpful for metric users too!

When you need to mark the center of the width, on a piece of wood, it can be hard to do if the width is a fractional measurement or not immediately obvious as to half of that measurement.

Just rotate your tape along the edge until a whole number is lined up with the edge of the wood and then make a mark at half of that number.

That gives you a mark at exactly half of the width of the workpiece!

What is Square?

The idea of “square” is vital to woodworking. It refers to a square angle that is 90 degrees. So, when two pieces of wood come together to form a 90 degree angle not only is that angle square, but they are said to be square to each other.
