Greg joined WoSP in 2014 and has only recently taken on the role of session leader. Greg is definitely a handyman & a wood worker. His workshop at home stores a vast amount of exotic timbers plus the equipment to undertake most projects.
He joined the club for its social availability of being able to talk to other people who liked working with wood. It just so happened his session leader at the time was John Kremser, a self-trained but very professional wood turner. John’s work would be proudly displayed on anybody’s mantel piece. John encouraged all those attending his sessions to draw, plan & then execute their project
As one of his attendees Greg has adopted his approach and applied it to turning and wood work in general.
Greg has an easy going nature and aims for his attendees to learn & go home with something they are proud to show their family & friends. Consequently Greg, as the new Friday session leader, has eased into the role without a hiccup. He is happy to pass on the knowledge he has learnt over the years.
A member of Woodworkers of Southern Peninsula for the last six years – this is his second year on
the Committee. Initially, he started on Toys then added woodturning as part of a ‘restoration
project’.
In toys, Noel has been pro-active with new ideas. He moved with Pam to Capel Sound eight
years ago. However, his first exposure to a woodworker type organization was to a Men’s Shed in Broome.
Noel has decorated his home with his woodturnings including several very large Banksia (Banksia Grandis) nuts, and beautiful turned lidded boxes.
Gaven spent many years in the Housing Industry and became a Registered Builder. He established his own building company which continued for 20 years until he retired.
In 2003 he built a house in Rye and permanently moved there from Wheelers Hill in 2011.
In 2014 Gaven joined the club to learn wood turning, a skill which he first encountered in his school years in Nhill.
Gaven enjoys challenging himself with new methods and different types of wood. Since joining the club he has become a team leader and shares his extensive knowledge with others.
Gaven enjoys a team environment and as a member of the Toymakers he works with the group to construct toys for children at Christmas.
Gaven joined the committee to support the club. It was Gaven’s initiative to commence the safety program to ensure that all the active members use the machinery correctly and safely.
Bob Wharton has been a member since 2006. Formerly a Ericsson technician, who spent a lot of time in engineering workshops, Bob has assisted with the maintenance of the workshop equipment when required. Bob is a problem solver who good with his hands. Around the club he is recognised for his turning, wood working craft and is one of only a few members that carve. At the WoSP Open day Bob displayed his wombat & draft horse. At the time his work was spotted by Greg Hunt who took an immediate interest and ordered one.
Ron Higgins seems to have been a session leader forever. His pen making skills excel as demonstrated when he turned the timber of one pen side grain.
Initially the sessions were on a Monday evening and that was popular with anyone working 9-5. Since having to move the session to Monday afternoon , due to dust extractor noise, the sessions are quieter & Ron has more time to assist anyone should they need assistance with their general woodworking or turning.
